Commission

Q: How do I commission a painting?

A: Simply send May-Lin an E-mail at commission@maylinart.com. If you already have a photo ready, you can send that along as a jpg file. May-Lin will then get back to you as soon as possible.

Q: I want to commission a painting, but am unsure of what medium to choose.

A: It is all a matter of preference:

Pencil drawings are good for fine details and usually suit all types of commissions.

Watercolour paintings are light with transluscent colours. They allow for a fine level of detail and will also suit all commission types.

Chalk-pastel paintings vil give a certain level of detail, and have a nice soft feel to them and are suited for all commission types, particularly baby- and pet portraits.

Oil-pastel paintings, as the name hints at, these pastels are oil-based and resemble oil- and acrylic paintings, and if desired, your portrait can be made in very vibrant colours. They are well suited for adult portraits - the kind you want to hang over the fire-place. They are less suited for pet portraits, as the oil-pastel does not allow for a high level of detail such as fur.

If you still have trouble deciding what medium will be best suited for your drawing/painting, then please do not hesitate to ask May-Lin for help at commission@maylinart.com

Q: How do I send the photo - and are there any special requirements?

A: Send the photo as a jpg file to commission@maylinart.com. Please make it as big as possible, but not over 1MB. The better the quality of your photo is, the better the drawing/painting will look.

Make sure that you own the copyright to the photo. For example, photographs taken by the school-photographer will not do, unless you have a written statement from the photographer that says you may use the photo. The snap-shot you took in the back-yard is okay, as is the photo taken by aunt Agatha last summer, provided she gives you permission to use it.

If you plan on taking your own photo especially for the portrait commission, here are some helpful hints:

* Make sure that the subject is well-lit. Night photos taken with a flash generally do not provide enough details for a successful portrait.

* Make sure that you take the photo from the same angle as you want the portrait to be. For standard portrait photos keep the camera at eye-level with the subject.

* For full body pet-portraits make sure that you take a picture of the whole pet, remember the tail!

Q: I want a portrait of my story/RPG character. What do I do?

A: Send a detailed description of your character to commission@maylinart.com. Remember to include a physical description (clothes, eye-colour, hair length etc.) and a mental description. If you want a background, please describe it as detailed as possible. Authors are welcome to send snippets of their writing (no more than 2000 words please).

Q: How do I take care of my portrait once I receive it?

A: When you have received the portrait the first rule is to wash your hands and generally try to touch it as little as possible

Pencil drawings: The pencil drawings will have been sprayed with a protective film, but be careful to minimize you touch, as our fingertips contain oil, which may discolour the drawing. If you wish to hang it, frame it in glass and place it somewhere that is not exposed to direct sunlight for long hours every day.

Watercolour paintings: Are less delicate then pencil drawings. Simply frame them behind glass and hang somewhere protected from direct sunlight.

Chalk Pastel Paintings: The pastel paintings will have been sprayed with a protective film, but try not to handle them too much. Use a mat when framing them, so that the surface of the painting does not touch the glass. Although pastel paintings are very light-fast, they will appreciate being kept away from direct sunlight.

Oil Pastel Paintings: Are very lightfast and can take some handling. Use a mat when framing them, so that the painting does not touch the surface of the glass.
